Gauhati University
Founded in 1948, Gauhati University (GU) is the oldest and largest university in Northeast India, symbolizing the academic, cultural and ecological heart of the region. Located in Jalukbari, Guwahati, the 484-acre campus lies amidst gentle hills and lush greenery, where nature and knowledge coexist in perfect harmony.
In every season, the campus offers a new charm, from the bright red Gulmohur (Delonix regia) flowers of spring to the golden Sonaru (Cassia fistula) blooms of summer. These timeless trees have earned GU the affectionate name “The Land of Gulmohur”.
Over the years, the university has evolved into a centre of higher learning, culture and sustainability, representing the academic heart of the entire Northeast. It continues to uphold its vision of combining knowledge, environment and tradition to build a better tomorrow


A legacy of excellence
Founded under the visionary guidance of Dr. Krishna Kanta Handiqui, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and Indologist, the university continues to be a hub of learning, culture and scientific progress. Over the decades, GU has produced leaders and visionaries including Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika (music maestro & cultural icon), Dr. Mamoni Raisom Goswami (Gyanpeeth Award-winning author), Sri Harishankar Brahma (Former Chief Election Commissioner of India), former Chief Ministers of Assam- Sri Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Late Tarun Gogoi, Sri Sarbananda Sonowal and Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the present Hon’ble Chief Minister and distinguished alumnus of Gauhati University.

A campus in harmony with nature
The Gauhati University campus is a living ecosystem. Nearly 35% of its area is covered by natural forests and wetlands, providing a sanctuary for species. The campus hosts: 180+ species of birds, 33 mammals, 74 species of fish, 180 species of butterflies and a variety of amphibians and reptiles. The university’s rich habitat not only support biodiversity but also maintain the microclimate of the campus.





Dr. H. K. Baruah Regional Botanical Resource Centre
Spread over 62 acres, this centre is one of the largest botanical gardens in Northeast India. Established in 1955 and renamed after the legendary botanist Late Professor H. K. Baruah, it houses over 600 species of plants including rare orchids, ferns, medicinal, aromatic, and endangered species. The garden also features: An orchidarium and fernarium, mushroom cultivation, tea germplasm and medicinal plant zones.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra
At the entrance of Gauhati University, lies the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra, the memorial site of the legendary singer, composer, lyricist and Bharat Ratna awardee Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, one of the university’s most distinguished alumni. This serene memorial stands as a symbol of Assam’s rich cultural legacy and honors Dr. Hazarika’s lifelong contribution to music, literature and the unity of humanity..
